About This Site

[John] I like breakfast; I snack for breakfast when I’m home, but when my wife and I travel, we started looking for little hole-in-the-wall, out of the way, local breakfast places. That’s how this blog was born.

Neither of us like hotel breakfasts much. Expensive hotels, especially the chain ones, offer great breakfasts, but they’re rarely worth the expense. Many less expensive hotel chains offer free breakfast for most guests (depending on room rate), but those breakfasts simply aren’t very good. Yes, you can get a freshly made waffle (you made yourself) and sometimes a freshly prepared omelet, but in most cases it's overcooked eggs and microwaved potatoes and meat. Great when you’re in a hurry, but just not an…experience.
Anna and I look for a particular experience, that’s our Breakfast Quest.

We generally look for:

  • Locally owned businesses.
  • Small, quaint places; specifically ones locals likely frequent.
  • Older restaurants
  • [John] A place with Country Fried Steak on the menu (see below)

We generally don’t like:

  • Bigger restaurant chains
  • Tourist traps (unless there are no other options available).
  • Breakfast buffets.
  • Newer restaurants

Chain Restaurants

We have a love/hate relationship with breakfast chain restaurants.

Anna will not eat at a McDonalds unless she’s absolutely desperate for something to eat. John loves them, it’s an excellent way to grab a quick bite when in a hurry.

John absolutely loves Bob Evans restaurants, they make excellent breakfasts and you always (so far) receive a consistent experience whenever you eat there. He grew up in Ohio, and you find these restaurants everywhere. We live in North Carolina now and they’re very hard to find.

Anna would eat at Cracker Barrel restaurants more than John would, he simply doesn't like them.

We both love Waffle House restaurants; when we can’t find somewhere interesting to eat breakfast, we’re always happy to stop there. Waffle House’s consistent experience across restaurants is on par with Bob Evans.

Favorite Breakfast Foods

We each have our favorite things we look for when deciding on a particular restaurant.

Anna’s is Avocado Toast.

John’s is Country Fried Steak (CFS). If we’re trying to choose between multiple restaurant options, the one that offers country fried steak is always my primary choice, hands down. You’ll find in my reviews a lot of discussions about the restaurant’s CFS.
